Mr. Mac’s Story
My father, Robert McDougall, better known in his day as “Bubba”, always cooked on the grill on Saturday afternoons. He began to create rubs and spices for the meats that he cooked, and this is how Mr. Mac’s was established. He only used the finest and of course, his favorite blends of herbs and spices.
As I grew up, I grew to love Mr. Mac’s. In 1972, I married Patty who is still my wonderful wife today. She began to use Mr. Mac’s special blend in her cooking as well. In 1980, Patty opened her own business, The Happy Cookers Catering Company. She used the spices in her recipes as well. It became so popular that in 1990, she started blending the spices and selling them in zip lock bags, salt shakers and such. In 2005, we decided that the rub had become so popular that we needed to have it bottled commercially and we sold it in her store on Devine Street in Columbia, SC.
In 2009, she sold the catery but they continued to sell Mr. Mac’s at the store because of the following it had gained.
Since the sale of the business, Patty has had more time on her hands and began creating other blends as well as lots of recipes. She now includes it on chicken, lamb, beef, fish, vegetable dishes and in many of her appetizers and snack chips. Please browse our Recipe page for many of our favorites.
